Joseph A. Sammartino Obituary

Joseph A. Sammartino, Jr., 87 of Canonsburg passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born on January 12, 1931 in Canonsburg to Joseph Sammartino, Sr., and Josephine Scichilone Sammartino who preceded him in death.

On April 19, 1954 he married Rita Raciborski who survives.

Joseph was a veteran having served his country in the United States Airforce from 1952 until 1956 during the Korean War. He was in the military Airforce Transportation Division.  Joseph was a member of the American Legion 902 in Houston.

He was a hairdresser by trade, working for Saks Fifth Avenue for six years, and then owned his own shops in Mitchell’s Corners in South Hills and Canonsburg. For many years he owned and operated Mr. Martino’s Beauty Academy.

Mr. Sammartino had many interests and hobbies including golfing, horseracing and bowling. He had bowled three 300 games in his lifetime and was the oldest Washington County resident to score a 300 in a game.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Rita M. ullom (Rusty) of Claysville, Renee Ledger of McDonald and Jody L. Winter (Edward) of Canonsburg, eight grandchildren, Melissa Rebarnick (Mike), Noma Neff (Andy), Ova Ullom (Amy) Jonathan Ullom (Jen), Jolyn Ullom, Jessica Aggers (Ben), Beth Ann Martin, and Briana McMasters (Lee), sixteen great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters Lillian and Edith and two grandchildren.

At the request of the deceased, all services and interment at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies are private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, LFD owner/supervisor and Darla A. Tripoli, LFD, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120.
