Laura Mae Steele Miller, born on May 24, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, surrounded by those who loved her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Peter Miller; her daughters Cynthia Novick and Lynn; and her cherished cat, Mokie, who is no doubt waiting for her at Rainbow Bridge. Laura Mae leaves behind a beautiful and expansive legacy: her children Denise and Robert Douglas, Paul and Maryann Miller, and Christopher and Kathy Miller; her grandchildren Laura Jane and husband Dan, Tina, Brandi, Rob and wife Heidi, Maghen and husband Joe, Julie and husband Sam, Shane and wife Kaitlyn, Taylor, and Kendall; her great-grandchildren Payton and husband Kees, Paige, Parker, Payne, Paisley, Jake, Bryce, Owen, Jordan, Brooklyn, Everly, Easton, Evangeline, and Meadow; and her great-great-grandchildren Kal-El, Katrien, and Kelbie. Together with Peter, Laura Mae built a vibrant family that became a true dynasty—41 strong and counting. She was never happier than when she was in service to her family, whether it was cooking holiday meals, offering comfort with a gentle arm tickle, or just being present with her fierce, unwavering love. Laura Mae will be fondly remembered for her bright blue eyes, beautifully manicured nails, lipstick in her purse, and her signature white dandelion hair. She was a fancy-soap-in-the-bathroom, candy-in-a-crystal-dish, scented-candle-figures-at-holidays kind of grandma. She loved a good party and if the mood was right, you might coax out her alter ego Jennifer who was five feet nothing of all sass and zero filter. Family vacations to the Outer Banks are a cherished memory, and the tales of mosquito battles (and miraculously avoiding malaria or West Nile) are now part of family legend. Christmas Eve wasn’t complete without her famous (and often declared “so expensive this year!”) stuffed artichokes. To know Laura Mae was to be loved with intensity, humor, and grace. She leaves behind memories that will be cherished, stories that will be told for generations, and a family forever changed by her presence. In honor of Laura Mae, put on your lipstick, pour a glass of something bubbly, and toast to the woman who made every room a little brighter just by being in it.
