Samuel (Sam) Wayne Ross Age 88 (September 4, 1938) of Houston, PA passed away peacefully on October 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.

The son of late Frank and Ann Ross, Houston, PA and late sister Ruth Battistone (Carl), Bethel Park, PA.

After graduating from Canonsburg High School in 1956 Sam joined and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged from the Marines he returned home to Houston, PA, where he married his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret (Marge) Hary, who preceded him in death.

Sam’s commitment to service led him to join the Houston Volunteer Fire Department, where he proudly served along side his father Frank.

To pursue his lifelong career in education, Sam put himself through college while working multiple jobs to support his family. Graduating from California University of PA with a degree in education and Duquesne University where he achieved a master’s degree.

Sam’s passion for education and desire to help children lead him to the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) where he would spend the majority of his career focusing on children with special needs. His mission to improve the lives of children with special needs was always top of mind and never faded even after he retired.

After retiring from the AIU, Sam started a consulting company and worked with many school districts to develop special education programs. Some of his fondest memories came from the time he spent consulting for Elizabeth Forward School District. Sam had a profound impact on so many children and their families.

His family and friends meant the world to him. He could always be found cracking a joke (or a beer) and manning the grill at family reunions. He loved traveling with Marge and visiting their favorite spots in Saint Pete Beach, FL. His passions include golf, Notre Dame football, reading and listening to jazz music while enjoying a fine cigar and a good glass of bourbon.

Sam was one of a kind and loved by many, he was a true character. He will be greatly missed!

He is survived by his two children Patricia Ross (David MacCallum) of Minneapolis, MN and Jason Ross (Nancy McGill) of Washington, PA.

Sam lived his life by his own simple quote……”Smile, today is the first day of the rest your life!”
