Walter Carl Weaver, 85, formerly of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 27, 2025, in McMurray, PA following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on November 6, 1939, to Clair and Betty (Glass) Weaver. Walter was the oldest of the couple’s five children. He spent his youth in Johnstown, attending local parochial schools before graduating from Johnstown Central Catholic High School in 1957. While at JCCHS, Walter distinguished himself in the classroom and on the debate stage, winning the National Forensic League national title for extemporaneous speech in 1956.
Walter attended Saint Vincent College and Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1961 and a master’s degree in theology in 1963. He credited his alma mater with impressing upon him the Benedictine qualities of hospitality, charity, and scholarship. Walt was particularly proud to have three of his children graduate from Saint Vincent.
Walt enjoyed a 50+ year career as an educator, first with Canon-McMillan School District; following his retirement from public schools, he continued to teach at Bishop Canevin High School, First Love Christian Academy, Community College of Allegheny County, and Washington & Jefferson College.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy (Melonic) Weaver, his sons Mark (Mary-Rachael) Weaver of Washington, PA, Paul (Rachael) Weaver of Rio, WV, and Justin Weaver of Sharpsburg, PA, and his daughter Clare (Scott) Orwig of Pierce, NE; his stepsons Trevor (Tracey) Handyside of Melbourne, FL and Brent (Terra) Handyside of Canonsburg, PA; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Walter is also survived by his brothers Ray (Lois) Weaver of Monroeville, PA, and David (Carrie) Weaver of Johnstown, PA, as well as his sister Jean (Nick) Moran of Palmyra. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Daniel Lee Weaver.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 4pm to 8pm at the Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg, PA, where departing prayers will be recited at 9:40 am on Friday, May 30, 2025. A funeral mass will be at the Saint Oscar Romero (St. Patrick’s) Catholic church in Canonsburg, PA beginning at 10am Friday, May 30, 2025. A private interment will take place at the Weaver Family Mausoleum in the Richland Cemetery, Johnstown, PA on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
